Why do I say controversial you may ask? Perhaps that word may be a bit of a stretch, but we have found that Jumbo beads are pretty polarizing. We have fans from around the world emailing us weekly inquiring about potential new Jumbos coming in. But we also have a lot of Trollbeads collectors who look at them in store and just can’t seem to find a way to wear them that they like. And honestly? I often fall into the second category.
So I wanted to share just a little blog post on my favorite ways of wearing Jumbo beads. Each photo here is one of the 3 ways I incorporate these Trollbeads into my daily designs. I tend to use the jumbo beads as “anchor points” on my design. As you can see on the bangle design I use it as an “anchor” or focal feature in the middle of the bangle, but I don’t find it necessary to make that bead my pop of color. De-emphasizing the Jumbo in this way, by allowing the surrounding beads to have more color impact, creates more balance in the design by not drawing too much attention to the Jumbo.
In contrast to the last design, I use the Jumbo here for the base and as the main source of color inspiration in this Trollbeads fantasy necklace. By stacking the beads from large to small, starting from the bottom, and using compatible colors that don’t compete with the Jumbo, we create a strong, but pleasing design.
Then, below, the fox tail chain is about as experimental as I get. I pick 3 Jumbos (because I like odd numbers) to start off my design. These beads will dictate the color story of the bracelet and I like to make sure they are pretty evenly spaced away from each other. Then I build out the whole design from that foundation. For example, here I chose 2 pink jumbos and a pink and green flower Jumbo. Next, I filled in with glass beads with compatible colors, and silver beads that would accent the soft, floral theme.
How do you feel about the jumbo beads? Are you a fan? If so how do you use Jumbo beads in your designs? Teach us your ways!
Of the ones I own, I use them sometimes to just tie in the color scheme of the day. Or if the combination of beads that I’m wearing do not really go together that well, I try to use the jumbos to set a new “encounter” in the bracelet. Meaning going from a baby bear bead to one of the Valentine’s beads then a jumbo to connect to a metallic. It’s almost a chaos promoter but it seems to work well with my collection.
I love Troll necklaces and have used several Jumbo beads as focal point for necklaces, both foxtail chain type and the fantasy ones.
